The DMV
The
DMV
, or Department of Motor Vehicles, as it's known in California, has all the information you need to renew your vehicle registration, drivers license, and other useful information.
You can even get an
instant online driving record.
The cost for an instant driving record is $2.00. Hey, that's even less than I pay when I order your record for insurance purposes. You can't complain about that.
Next is your vehicle registration. The Department of Motor Vehicles will now suspend your vehicle registration if you let your car insurance lapse. You will then be required to
buy a car insurance policy
, submit proof of liability insurance to them, and pay a $14.00 reinstatement fee.
It will normally take the department 1-3 days after you buy car insurance to update your record and remove the suspension.
If you're trying to renew your registration and get current tags, you have to wait until the suspension is removed.
The quickest and easiest way to notify them that you now have insurance is to let me, or your agent, take care of it. For example, once you buy the policy from me, I send an email instantly notifying them of your insurance.
You can
check the status of your registration.
You will need your license plate number and the last 5 digits of your VIN, or Vehicle Identification Number. If after you enter the information, and it says DMV has no outstanding records, you're good to go.
If your registration is suspended, or is about to be suspended, the page will ask you for insurance information and
may ask you to pay a $14.00 reinstatement fee.
Don't bother posting insurance information, because it won't show in their records until your insurance company notifies them, usually several weeks after you get the insurance.
The quickest way to notify the department of your insurance is to let me, or your agent, take care of it.
If they do suspend your registration, you can pay the $14.00 fee immediately, and it is recommended that you do so, because they have to receive both the proof of insurance from your agent and the $14.00 fee before they will remove the suspension.
